There are two older craters on the top of Ruapehu. The crater outlines are now seen around the large flat plateau of ice that permanently fills the craters at a depth of around 180 meters. The oldest rocks exposed on Ruapehu are about 230,000 years old, and like Tongariro it is thought the volcano may have been active for about 1,000,000 years.
